The Toronto Maple Leafs fired head coach Paul Maurice on Wednesday after he failed to lead the team into the playoffs during his two seasons behind the bench, according to media reports.
Both CBC television and Canadian sports network TSN said the Maple Leafs decided to part ways with Maurice, who still had one year left on a three-year contract.
The Maple Leafs did not return calls seeking confirmation of Maurice's firing but have scheduled a press conference for 3:00 p.m. (1900 GMT) on Wednesday.
Under Maurice, the team was unable to secure a spot in the National Hockey League playoffs, despite late-season rallies. Maurice ended with a 76-66-22 record with the Leafs.
No replacement has been named.
