David Miliband held a meeting yesterday in Ankara with Foreign Affairs Minister Ali Babacan which was followed by a joint press conference. Miliband was asked whether the action to close the AK Party would affect relations with the EU. Miliband answered, "th emain principle of the EU is that governments be chosen by the public. Of course Turkey has its own constitutional law; however, governments elected by the public should be supported."

Referring to the action to ban the AK Party, Britain's Foreign Affairs Minister Miliband stated: "the public should elect the government, not judges." Political messages, which due to the necessities of her positions were not delivered by Queen Elizabeth during her visit, were given by the British Minister of Foreign Affairs David Miliband. Miliband accompanied the Queen and made contacts in the capital city, Ankara. Miliband had a meeting with Foreign Affairs Minister Ali Babacan and took part in a press conference afterwards. Referring to the action to ban the AK Party and its effects on relations with the EU, Miliband stated: "the basic principle of the EU is that governments are elected by the public. Of course, Turkey has its own constitutional law; however governments elected by the public should also be supported. This government has made significant changes since the year 2002; moreover, it was elected for another term just a short while ago. The public should choose their government and not judges." |
