Combing out superstitions in the hadithDepartment of Religious Affairs Chairman, Ali Bardakoğlu, talked about recent work done on hadith, which is being deemed as 'Islamic Reform' by the West. "A team of 80 are scanning through all of the existent hadith. We are conducting a metholodological study where we are sorting through traditional and personal interpretations. For example, words humiliating women are attributed to the prophets. We are combing this through. We will publish six volumes. However, what we are doing is not a reform of Islam."

Ali Bardakoğlu, the chairman of the Department of Religious Affairs, discussed the methodological studies on hadith, being referred to by the West as 'Islamic Reform'. Bardakoğlu said: "we are not reforming Islam; we are reforming ourselves, our own way of religiosity." The Department of Religious Affairs is conducting studies to determine incorrect interpretations on women and superstitions in hadith. Bardakçı said: "A team of 80 are scanning all existent hadith. For example, words humiliating women are attributed to the prophets. We are combing through such interpretations. We will publish six volumes. However, what we are doing is not reform on Islam." These efforts made by the Department of Religious Affairs has had repercussions in the international press. A British newspaper wrote: "Turkey is interpretting the Koran in accordance to the modern era." Regarding these studies being referred to as Islamic reform, Bardakoğlu stated: "we are not reforming Islam; we are reforming ourselves, our own way of religiosity." |
