Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed the need for the manufacturing of Turkeys own brand of domestic vehicle. Stating it would be befitting to the nation, Erdoğan also mentioned that over half a million vehicles, in other words, 510,000 automobiles sales transpire in Turkey.
"Last night, I said to Mr. Koç, 'Let's start producing domestic automotives with a brand similar to your last name and say to the world… See, this is our car!' Let's do this. We shouldn't just be assembling cars here. All of the big guns in the automotive sector are here now. Let's get this done. Whether you do it all together, or if someone says, no I will take it on myself, however you like. Let's just do it. It would be befitting for Turks and Turkey. We need to do this."
After the Prime Minister addressed members of the Turkish Industry & Business Association, or TÜSİAD, SABAH asked a few pertinent members to share their opinion:
Koç Holding Chief of the Executive Board Mustafa Koç: "It's not that easy of a task. Technologically, it appears almost impossible to do. However, we will do all that we can." Koç also noted that the infrastructure was lacking for electrical vehicles.
Anadolu Holding Executive Committee Chairman Tuncay Özilhan: Expressing that there were ongoing efforts in place, especially regarding the production of electric vehicles, Özilhan states, "Why not. It's possible. There are a few independent companies working in this area. There could be a collaboration."
Kibar Holding Assistant Chief of the Executive Board Ali Kibar: "Those who work at it will do it. What is important is how much manufacturing will be conducted. For a start, at least 100,000 to 200,000 vehicles must be produced. Will the state designate one billion dollars to source this? Will there be tax incentives?
