Minister of the interior Beşir Atalay commented on the recent regulation adopted by the Council of Ministers which dictates that 36,000 police officers will only have to serve three weeks of military duty, by stating, “From here on out, we will be looking into a new arrangement for the mandatory military service served by university students that want to become police officers.”

Atalay states, "We are currently working on the issue. If university graduates complete their military service prior then we won't face these types of issues."
Once the legislation takes effect, police officers that have graduated from police vocational schools will only have to serve six months instead of 15 months military service, while those that are graduates from the police academy will only to serve three weeks of military service instead of the previously mandatory six months to one year of service.
